Blood & Dream

Secret rooms

Secret rooms generate on all levels. They have miscolored doorways hidden on the walls and contain higher level goods. Up to three secret room clusters can spawn but most likely two will spawn. They can range in sizes drastically, they can be as small as 1 and (as far as I'm aware) upto 8 large. Regardless of your location the secret rooms are bright purple and pink.

Finding and entering

  • Secret room doors can sometimes be spotted from a distance by darker sprites, but depending on the floor's color palette they may be impossible to see. Walking against a suspected wall makes a hand icon appear; press interact to open it.
  • The hand will not appear if water, spikes or acid block the entrance.
  • The Eye Ring marks hidden doors on the map.

Contents

Secret rooms are the usual place to find portals to alternate floors, which in turn drop extra note letters and loot. These portals are not guaranteed every run. Known destinations are Frog World, Blood Rooms, Black Crystal and the Underground; Dark Zone is reached through a ceiling hatch. Secret rooms are also where the Warlock is most likely to appear and where the ritual circle for the Demon NPC is found (see Summon Demon).

  • Where they appear: the guide says up to two chains of secret rooms can appear on any of the four main floors and on secret floors, on any wall without a door, including the spawn room. They cannot appear in fountain rooms, chest rooms, shops, boss rooms, or secret rooms that have no connecting hallway. One commenter reports finding three chains in a single River level, which disagrees with the limit of two.
  • How to find them: secret doors have slightly darker sprites, but on some colour palettes they are not visible at all. The guide's advice is to walk into a suspected wall and watch for the hand icon, then interact. The hand will not appear if water, spikes or acid block the entrance, and secret rooms cannot be entered while a room is still hostile.
  • What is inside: caged imps, monoliths, pots (which may be mimics), weapon rocks, gravestones, hazards, lore slabs, lore orbs, an NPC, the frog man's tent, summoning sigils, and ordinary enemies.
  • Altars inside: coin altars, boon altars, and eater altars. The guide advises against eater altars because they cost maximum ring capacity, but notes they carry unique items found nowhere else, which a commenter stresses. Another commenter rates the coin altar highly against the guide's opinion.
  • Exits: portals (all secret portals share one texture), down hatches to the Underground, up hatches to the Dark Zone, and the gold altar to the realm of gold. The guide says all of these lead to alternate floors carrying more name letters and loot.
