Strategy

Due to having the highest reach, joint highest speed and decent knockback; the Mourning Sword could easily be considered the best weapon in the game. Although it's damage is significantly lower than its main competitors (Rapier, Writhen Blade, Sabre). this can easily be supplemented through rings and potions.

Its high base thrust damage pairs well with its long reach, and allows for a more careful playstyle. It is particularly effective counter against slime enemies and blood enemies which can otherwise be difficult to safely land hits on.

In terms of rings, the Mourning Sword benefits from any damage increasing rings, allowing it to match the raw strength of swords like the Rapier and Sabre. Attack speed increases are not of huge concern as the base speed bonus is already quite considerable, and rings like the Bullet Ring which increase your range are obviously going to have less of an impact when using this sword, although it may still be worth taking in order to deal with Gnomes.

Obviously there is no strategy to potions beyond not drinking the bad ones; however, it is worth noting that attack speed potions are going to be much less valuable than attack damage potions due to the high base speed of the weapon.
